PRINTMAKING

After years of working in large-format silkscreen, both for my own images and collaborating with other artists to create fine art silkscreens of their work, I now enjoy the simpler and more direct process of carving and hand printing small-format block prints.

The subjects of my block prints are usually animals, birds and insects that live around my home in the forest. The issues are completely different from the multi-layered color work of my oil painting and pastel work. Here the work is about carving and texture, and creating feeling with just a few gestures and colors.

I may have several block print ideas in process at the same time while working on drawings and a couple of paintings. I’ll do a few steps in the process, carving or printing a color, and then come back to it later, when I’m in a different mood and interested in a break from painting.
