LANDSCAPES

I look for scenes with strong compositions and texture, and for light that makes the colors vibrate, often returning to the same subject several times in different seasons, to explore variations of light, angle, weather or water flow. Whether using oil paint or pastels I usually work meticulously and slowly, applying many multiple layers of color to achieve the depth and vibration I’m seeking.

Much of my work contains lively elements of spring and new life, with a favorite palette that particularly includes a vibrant range of greens, offset and grounded with warm yellows, umbers and earth tones. I’m hopeful that a reverence and joy in beholding our natural landscape vibrates in each piece.

I paint intimate, natural places that amplify a tranquil beauty, places that continue to exist and grow even in the face of all the darkness and strife which at times can seem so close by.

Sometimes the work begins on location, en plein air, and then finished in the studio. Going out hiking or driving to discover new scenes, chasing the right moments of light, is immediate and spontaneous, a direct connection to nature. Other times I go on field trips to capture photo images that I later use to layout and create paintings entirely in the studio.
